A Celebrity Just Sent Me the Worst Pitch I’ve Ever Seen

A Lesson in How Not to Do It

Even celebrities, with all their sway and influence, are not immune to a bad pitch.

A well known off-the-telly wine personality recently got into some trouble over sending nasty anonymous texts about women in the trade. This has lead to other scandals coming to light, including serious sexual abuse in the most elite wine circle, the Court of Master Sommeliers.

I decided to weigh in, so a few weeks ago I wrote something on a friend’s wine blog about my experiences with sexism during my wine store ownership years.

This week, I received an email from that same wine celebrity whose texting fingers had been rather trigger happy. I’d expected perhaps one of the following:

  1. An apology for how his behaviour had affected women in the wine trade
  2. A defence for his behaviour
  3. Suggestions for how he could help get my message a wider audience

Instead, he pitched me to become a client of his new company.

In my professional life, I was pitched to several times a day, as almost all of us are, in one capacity or another. But so few of these pitches ever hit the mark. And normally, the mistakes are obvious and so easily…
