Growing up, I always associated travel with discomfort. My family holidays were always about camping or youth hostels or sleeping in the back of vans. Cold, wet — horrible, frankly.

As I grew up — and travel became a permanent full-time fixture — I realized how dumb this is. I’m all for stepping out of your comfort zone, but I’d rather do it after a good night’s sleep thank you very much.

As such, I’ve become a master at traveling comfortably, both in the act of traveling itself and when you arrive at your destination.

These are my top five items that will immeasurably boost your comfort on your next trip. Bonus point — none of them cost more than $20.

The pillow to end all pillows

People laugh at the memory foam pillow that comes with me everywhere. Airbnb hosts eye it suspiciously — I expect they wonder if I think their pillows aren’t adequate (they’d be right, usually they’re not). Travel bros with their “I once slept on a bench” stories think I’m too delicate to endure the hardships of life on the road.
